Our story

About

The True Sportsman Club was started as a trout planting club back in the 1920s. Its members hiked to streams in the Sierra Nevada mountains east of Jackson, California, carrying five-gallon milk containers full of fingerling trout, which they released into the tributaries of the Cosumnes River.

Today it’s a small private shooting club with 275 members. All members of the True Sportsman Club are also members of the National Rifle Association. The club has a range officer home, a 25-yard handgun range, two trap fields, a 50 and 100-yard rifle range, a clubhouse, and an archery area.

The club is managed by a slate of elected officers and an executive committee who oversee its activities, maintenance, and improvements. The True Sportsman Club is a 501(c)(7) non-profit organization. Volunteers put on handgun, rifle, muzzle-loader, and shotgun fun shoots throughout the year, open to the public.

On Wednesday evenings in June and July, the club sponsors a Summer Trap League, open to youth, women, and men of all ages and experience levels. It also sponsors a youth clay target program for school-age children from 6th through 12th grade, active February through June. On the third Sunday in May, the club offers a shooting clinic for novice women interested in learning about firearms and the shooting sports.

The object of the True Sportsman Club is to encourage organized rifle, pistol, shotgun, and archery shooting among citizens of the United States resident in our community, with a view toward better knowledge of the safe handling and proper care of firearms, as well as improved marksmanship.

It is our further object and purpose to forward the development of honesty, good fellowship, self-discipline, team play, and self-reliance — the essentials of good sportsmanship and the foundation of true patriotism.
